Lake Highlands Elementary is a month into a “Social Emotional Learning” program. Every class participates in Second Step curriculum at the beginning of each day.

Although each grade level’s focus differs a little each week, the school is focusing on being assertive and understanding feelings. The program teaches other skills such as listening, focusing attention and using self-talk.

These skills enable children to self-regulate, learn, manage emotions and solve problems.

Teachers lead warm up “brain builder” games. While there is a focus on empathy, students are also taught how to calm down and manage feelings.

Ultimately, the plan is to lead to children who have better success in the classroom.

LHE explained the program to parents at an event earlier this week, you can look at the presentation here.
