The Dallas Morning News mistakenly identified  District 10 City Council member Adam McGough as Omar Narvaez in today’s newspaper.

Unfortunately, mistakes like that are part of a trend among American newspapers.

As newspapers cut costs by firing copy editors, who used to be the third line of defense behind writers and line editors, embarrassing errors are becoming commonplace.

Sara Ziegler, the president of ACES, the national Society for Editing, spoke to the Orlando Sentinel on this topic last week:

“You need to make the case for copy editors, that it does matter,” Ziegler told the Sentinel. “It hurts the trust of a newspaper.”
