The historic community of Hamilton Park will host a Juneteenth Parade and Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday. The parade will begin at the New Mount Zion Baptist Church and end at the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center. Spectators may gather on Stults Road, Forest Lane and Shroeder Road to watch the festivities.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free. Though President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had become law on January 1, 1863, conditions in Texas were unchanged until the liberation brought by Juneteenth.
The festival at Hamilton Park will include entertainment, food, kids’ activities, games, health screenings, art and much more. The event is sponsored by the Hamilton Park Historic Preservation Foundation, Hamilton Park Next Generation Leaders, All in D10 and the Dallas Parks Department.
