Council members in Dallas have a tradition of ensuring diversity of leadership, and Medrano, deputy mayor pro tem for Mayor Rawlings, was elected first. A motion to elect Jennifer Staubach Gates then failed, and McGough was elected unanimously.

McGough’s position comes with a new office in city hall and a new seat around the horseshoe closer to the mayor.
