The Christmas tree is lit at the Lake Highlands Town Center, and lots of children are very happy.

“It’s our family tradition,” said White Rock Elementary fourth grader Campbell King, who attended Light Up the Highlands Sunday night with family and friends. “We also went when it was across from the high school, but I like it better here. There are more activities, and I’m seeing all my friends.”

Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League volunteers moved the location due to construction in Lake Highlands Recreation Center Park, where the new Family Aquatics Center is being built. League members hosted balloon artists, face painters, kids’ crafts, cookie decorating, carolers, a holiday movie and a visit from Santa – complete with live reindeer.

The event also drew residents of other communities, such as Jennifer Lee, who attended with daughters Macy and Caroline and lives near White Rock Lake.

“We came to get a little Christmas going,” Jennifer told me while the girls waited in line to visit Santa.

“I love seeing all the Christmas stuff,” said Macy, 8.

“I love the hot chocolate,” retorted Caroline, 5, just before climbing into Santa’s lap to say she’d like to find a sewing machine under the tree on Christmas morning.
