Lindsay Toler helps distribute Roma boots to needy children in Moldova

The Junior World Affairs Council at Lake Highlands High School is hosting a shoe drive to benefit vulnerable children. Students are collecting donations of new athletic shoes, to be delivered to Dallas’ Bucker Center for Humanitarian Aid, and encouraging online donations to the Roma Foundation, which provides shoes for underwater grip for needy children all over the world who occasionally face flooding with their living conditions.

LHHS’ Junior World Affairs Council promotes awareness of international issues, inviting knowledgeable speakers to campus interact with students. Lily Heine of UNICEF will speak Nov. 28 about the refugee crisis, with special emphasis on Central and South America, Burma, Africa and the Middle East. Fred Rugamba, born in Burundi and raised in South Africa, will address students Dec. 4 about the 1994 Tutsi genocide. The JWAC meets 4:15-5:15 in the LHHS library.

Roma Boots, founded by Samuel Bistrian, sends a new pair of Romas to a child in need for every pair it sells. Roma is headquartered in the Shops at Park Lane and is offering a special 30% discount when shoppers use the code “LHHS.” Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls, the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, gives new shoes and socks to kids around the world.

If you’d like to help, shoes will be collected at LHHS until December 19.
