Twenty-five residents were displaced and one firefighter was injured Monday
A firefighter was injured and 25 residents lost their homes in an apartment fire Monday in the 6521 block of Melody Lane near Skillman and Northwest Highway.
Firefighters responded to the Veranda at Midtown complex, behind JCPenney and the Timber Creek shopping center, about 8:45 a.m. and found flames shooting through the roof. Responders initially fought the fire aggressively, but retreated to defensive posture when the roof was consumed. No residents were hurt, but at least 8 apartments were damaged.
The injured firefighter was released from the hospital after receiving treatment for a non-life-threatening burn to the upper part of his body. The American Red Cross and Wilshire Baptist Church are helping residents with their needs. Wilshire folks say Walmart gift cards are especially needed and may be mailed to or dropped at the church.
