Once upon a time, in the land of Lake Highlands, neighbors anxiously awaited a place to eat greasy hash browns and sugary waffles at 3 a.m. They rejoiced — or scowled — when Waffle House announced it would open at the southwest corner of Greenville and Forest Lane.

Then, a year later, the smell of coffee and bacon never wafted into the parking lot. Neighbors never waited at booths for chocolate chip waffles, perhaps after a night at One Nostalgia or King’s X. Waffle House never opened.

So the Advocate reached out to the breakfast chain to figure out what went wrong.

“Right now, it’s projected for 2021 to open,” Pat Warner, director of public relations and external affairs, told us via email. “That’s all the details I have for now.”

As soon as we learn the reason for the three-year delay, we’ll let you know.
