1968 LHHS Reunion Committee

Walter and Rosemary Carona moved to Lake Highlands in 1955, purchasing a home on Liptonshire and enrolling little Martha in first grade at Lake Highlands Elementary. Martha’s older brother, Chuck, went into fifth grade and sister Rosemary was just a baby. Afternoons were spent riding bikes down the great Ferndale hill.

Martha Carona Lammers says these and other memories were unleashed when she and a committee of about 20 hosted the Lake Highlands High Class of 1968’s 50th reunion in July.

“When Wallace opened, the fifth and sixth grades were sent there,” Martha says. “My mother was in the very first PTA at LHE, LHJH and LHHS. Chuck was in the first graduating class of 1964, back when grades 7-12 were in the LHJH building. Rosemary graduated in 1973, which was my first year to teach at LHHS.”

Martha was the Wildcat cheer sponsor, volleyball coach and girls’ track coach before moving to LHHS’ business department. Chuck served as assistant principal at LHJH and LHHS before moving to Highland Park then Pearce. He later became dean of Dallas Baptist University. Rosemary also taught at LHJH.

Though friends can catch up in today’s digital world without face-to-face reunions and the group has hosted reunions every 5 years, Martha said this gathering was the biggest one yet.

“The reunion was just amazing. We had almost as much fun planning as we had at the party,” Martha says. “The Highlandettes came and performed, and we took a picture of the Highlandettes from our class who were there along with [former director] Frances Davenport.”

Funds raised from the event went to an $1,100 scholarship for 2018 LHHS grad Christopher Villareal.
