Students at Highlander School celebrated Veteran’s Day last week by collecting goodies and packing 54 boxes to send to Lake Highlands men and women serving their country. Postage to mail the boxes was donated by the LH Exchange Club.
Lake Highlands Military Moms were touched by the children’s efforts and grateful for the sentiment they represented.
“As a mom of an Air Force Captain who benefited from receiving boxes in previous deployments, I am so thankful for our supportive Lake Highlands community,” said Susan Rose. Her son, Phillip, an LHHS 2005 grad now stationed at the Pentagon, was sent a package during a previous deployment to Africa.
“Phil and his fellow airmen were struck that people they had never met were willing to send them a little of home in a box,” added Susan, a member of LH Military Moms. “When LHMM and partners send boxes, we don’t send one, we send many.”
Contents inside the packages can vary season-to-season, she said, but Phillip’s favorites were hot sauce, balls and a small bath rug, which she said was a lifesaver since soldiers often spend long periods on concrete floors.
“He picked out his favorites and shared the rest.”
Susan, who assisted students packing the boxes, said the benefits don’t just go to soldiers.
“The kids had a great time but also were learning valuable lessons about their school, community and country.”
