At the last Northeast Division Health and Safety Fair we attended, I attempted very unsuccessfully to walk a straight line in intoxication-simulation goggles, and I scratched the noggin of a Labrador trained to sniff out bombs — it was pretty cool.

This year’s fair takes place Saturday at Conrad High School, 7502 Fair Oaks Ave. from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

In addition to all the fun stuff, which also includes tours of a police helicopter, SWAT vehicles and vintage cars, interactions with the K-9 unit, soccer games, face painting and a bicycle rodeo, the festival offers services including free medical screenings and flu shots, free coats for students from Vickery Meadow, a job fair, free food and drinks and vendors from 60-plus charities and churches ready to help residents in need.

The Northeast Division covers Lake Highlands, the White Rock area and other parts of Northeast and East Dallas.
