The Chicago Marathon happened a few days ago—some guy ran a sub-3-hour marathon while juggling, which is impressive. But back in 2012, a neighborhood resident overcame a life-threatening illness and ran the Chicago Marathon just a few weeks later.

On the morning of July 24, when the pain started, the runner was several weeks into training for the Chicago Marathon. Following his morning workout, he noticed tightness in the area around his high inner thigh.

The ache, which would rapidly escalate to bullet-wound level pain, was the first sign of an infection that nearly took the 39-year-old’s life …
