The White Rock based Dallas United Crew Pink team of breast cancer survivors took the grand prize in the women’s division at the DFW Dragon Boat Festival.
A few months ago we told you about Dallas United Crew’s dragon boat team made up of breast cancer survivors, which practices at White Rock Lake and includes Lake Highlands and East Dallas residents.
It’s called DUC Pink, a Dragon Boat Team of women who have survived breast cancer.
There are about 150 such teams around the world and festivals and competitions where they gather, but this is the first of its type in Dallas. Team member Debbie Bunch Kehoe was on a team in Oregon before moving to Dallas in 2006. “After 10 years, I can’t wait to get back in the boat,” she says. “Being part of a breast cancer survivor team is about thriving and not just surviving. It’s about lifelong friends, improving your mental and physical health and reaching the newly diagnosed, to give them hope.” A dragon boat team involves 20 paddlers sitting two abreast and a steersperson in a 40-foot long, canoe-like boat moving to the beat of a drummer at the bow. The boat is very stable, and no prior paddling experience is required, according to a DUC announcement.
According to a weekend newscast, Pink easily stood out among the crowd, their base camp covered in bright pink, at last weekend’s annual DFW Dragon Boat Festival in Irving.
DUC Pink is winning in so many ways, most notably the literal way: They won first place in the all-women division.
