Wade Smith does a literacy tour at Lake Highlands schools

Yes, you could join the ranks of the NFL’s Antonio Smith, K104 Radio’s Cat Daddy, the actor who plays Flash Gordon Sam Jones and many other well-known entertainers who read to elementary school children as part of the Reading With The Pros Literacy Tour, put on by Lake Highlands native Wade Smith, a retired professional football player, and his locally rooted foundation.

The program “promotes and supports childhood literacy and education through in-person celebrity book readings and classroom visits,” according to Smith.

On April 22, Wade and company will visit three Richardson ISD schools — Audelia Creek Elementary, Thurgood Marshall and Wallace Elementary — where they will read aloud to students in grades K-2. For the older students, Smith and his guests will lead an interactive discussion forum that will focus on literacy and education.

Wade’s foundation does visible good work in our neighborhood. In the past, I’ve written about his support of the Hamilton Park kids’ football league in the article article: “Game Changer.”

There are many ways for neighborhood residents to involve themselves with Wade’s work.

Sign up here to join Wade and his friends on the literacy tour.

There also is a celebrity golf tournament and youth sports clinics happening around the same time. Visit the foundation website for more information.

Look for more on Wade and the kids he has helped in the May print magazine.
