If you’ve ever wanted to run a 5k at night, now is your chance. Grab your BFF running buddy and put on your glow-in-the-dark gear. The first annual Carry the Torch 5k and Fun Run will be Friday night, March 11.

“We wanted to do something totally different from the usual 5k,” says Sharon Ballew, vice president of development at C.C Young. “We wanted to do something on our campus, in our neighborhood to create awareness of C.C. Young and seniors in need.”

So lace up, because here’s seven reasons you’ll want to be at Carry the Torch 5k:

1.It’s at night AND it is a tough course.
Runners who prefer a 10k race will enjoy it because there are plenty of hills and you’ll be running through the White Rock park area.

2. Beer — duh
There’s nothing quite like downing a few cold ones after crossing the finish line, right?

3. Live music
DJ Jeff Hickok will be spinning tunes and the Live Again band will take the stage.

4. Grilled cheese heaven
Save room for a post-race treat. You don’t want to miss a gourmet grilled cheese from Ruthie’s Food Truck or the chance to get your carb on with a sweet treat from Cup-cakin.

5. Marathon runner celebrity chairs
Dr. Kenneth Cooper is the Celebrity Chairperson for the 5k and Orville Rogers is the Honorary Chair. Both are local marathon runner legacies.

6. It’s all for a good cause
Carry the Torch supports C.C. Young’s Cares Program, which provides healthy meals to seniors in need throughout the metroplex. In addition, it supports C.C. Young’s Benevolence Fund. What’s better than running to give back?

7. Glow, baby glow
As part of your registration, you’re going to get the coolest glow kit ever.

Carry the Torch was chosen as a theme, according to Ballew, because “seniors carry the torch for us,” she says. “They pave the way for us. Now it is our turn to pass the torch.”
