“I’m at the store! We’ve been robbed at gunpoint!”

The ordeal ended quickly and the customers at Ferndale and Northwest Highway were safe, but they have quite a story to tell.

“I was in the back of the store with some other shoppers and someone screamed,” Vela told me. “I thought, ‘what is she doing? Did someone spill on her?’”

A tall, slim, African-American male wearing a black t-shirt pulled out a gun and demanded money.

“He took the cash register drawer. He was yelling, ‘stay back, stay back. Don’t anybody move.’ He left in a waiting car.

“I was in the back, hiding behind a post. I didn’t want to become a hostage. Another lady and I just stayed still. I had a clear view of the cash register, but I wasn’t going to sacrifice myself for discounted, luxury sheets,” she joked.

I asked if she was scared.

“I was, a little bit, but I was toward the back of the store and several other people were up near the register. It was exciting, but the employees were extremely shaken. You never expect the Tuesday Morning to be robbed. The 7-11 maybe, or you might expect a shoplifter to come in. I mean, this is where housewives go. And why do it in the daytime with so many people around?”

Witnesses said they saw the alleged robber walking around in the nearby Dollar Tree beforehand. Several gave detailed descriptions.

Tomba says she wants her neighbors to be watchful.

“It’s weird to think a few blocks from a school, there’s a crazy robber cruising our streets.”
