Events happening in and around Lake Highlands, now through the weekend:
1. Get your weekend going early tonight, Aug. 12, with a screening of the campy 1983 film “Flashdance,” Studio Movie Grill’s “girls night out” selection this month. The theater’s SMG with a Twist series, features a range of date-night classics, indie films and shows for audiences with special needs. Studio Movie Grill, 11170 N. Central, 214.361.2966, studiomoviegrill.com, $3
2. All weekend, see the presidents-and-baseball exhibit at Southern Methodist University. In the midst of chaos, Americans often turn to baseball for comfort. Following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, George W. Bush donned a FDNY sweater and went to Yankee Stadium. His World Series first pitch became a symbol of hope for many. It seems appropriate, then, that The Bush Center hosts an exhibit on baseball and the Presidency. “Baseball: America’s Presidents, America’s Pastime” showcases how baseball has mirrored trends in greater society. The exhibit includes artifacts from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., as well as other collections. George W. Bush Presidential Center, 2943 SMU Boulevard, 214.200.4300, bushcenter.org, $10-$16
3. All weekend, the “Wild and Peaceful” exhibit shows at Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake. Neighborhood artist Anna Palmer has been photographing wildlife and landscapes at White Rock Lake for several years. She explores the lake as a peaceful respite, she explains, as well as a place with a “livelier side that comes from the rich ecosystem found in the area.” Palmer’s photos are on display at the White Rock Museum, inside the Bath House. Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther,214.670.8749. It’s free.
