Updated Sunday afternoon
The driver of the car that struck and killed 55-year-old David Benton at 8:20 a.m. Sunday attempted to flee, but police tracked him down.
It happened just north of the Skillman-Walnut Hill intersection. When I drove through the area at about 9:30 a.m., police, fire-rescue and forensic investigators had closed down Skillman between Walnut Hill and the north Town Center entrance, and several emergency vehicles were gathered in the south parking lot of Lake Highlands Town Center, near the Haven apartments.
Turns out a westbound vehicle, a Saturn sedan, struck a man and dragged his body through the Skillman-Walnut Hill intersection. The driver fled through the Town Center lot shortly before he abandoned his car and absconded. Police quickly located the car and then the suspect in a nearby residential area, and they arrested the suspect for failure to stop and render aid and accident involving death.
The suspect is Angel Lopez-Gil, 22. The victim is 55-year-old David Benton.
