Firefighters responded to the house at 9340 Moss Circle about 3 p.m. after a caller driving down Royal Lane near Abrams reported seeing smoke from the nearby rooftop and windows. Once early responders got inside, crews found the woman’s body in an upstairs bedroom. Paramedics attempted CPR to no avail. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The medical examiner will determine cause of death.

Her husband, Nick, and grown daughter arrived on scene after emergency responders. Investigators returned later Monday night to check out the kitchen.

Neighbors say Dixie, in her 70s, may have been asleep upstairs when the fire started.
