Whitney Holotik (blonde) and Cara L. Reid (brunette) star in Echo Theatre’s mania/gift

Whitney Holotik is starring in a new play this month, part of the 16th annual Festival of Independent Theatres (FIT), sponsored by Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs. The project brings together eight theatre companies and 8 one-act plays – your ticket on one evening gets you in to see two of them.

“I absolutely love FIT,” the 2002 Lake Highlands High grad told me. “It is a great opportunity for patrons to see a bunch of different shows produced by different theatres, and because they are only one act, they tend to be direct and to the point. We only have 50 minutes, and we have to make it count. This year is especially exciting, because all the shows are new – either completely new works or some form of adaptation.”

Whitney, is known around Dallas for her work acting with the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas, Stolen Shakespeare Guild and Right of Passage Theatre Company, caught the acting bug performing in LHHS’ Alice in Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet and the Music Man. She stars in Echo Theatre’s mania/gift.

“Mania/gift has been a truly special project. It is based on a true story about a successful novelist who is struggling with her manic creative mind. The script was developed through interviews with the friend of writer and director Shelby-Allison Hibbs, so it has become very close to all of our hearts. We wanted to get it right.”

All performances will be held at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake. Performances begin this Friday and continue through Aug. 2 (a show schedule is here). You can read more about the other eight plays here. You can purchase tickets here. Single tickets are $20 or festival passes are available.
