While he was a student at Lake Highlands High School, Tanner McElroy was more likely to be spotted on the baseball field than in the school library. The 2001 grad was a star pitcher for the Wildcats before heading off to play for Texas Tech.

This week, though, marks the official launch of Tanner’s first book, War of Wings, and he’s doing it up in style. A party at the Dallas Arboretum’s Rory Myers Children’s Garden will be hosted by Josh Henderson, JR from the new Dallas, and TV personality Hillary Kennedy. Future books in the trilogy and a movie are in the works.

The story, about a war that leads to the fall of one-third of angels from Heaven, is written from the two opposing perspectives of Gabriel and Lucifer. Tanner calls it a classic tale of good versus evil, a fast-paced battle of angels yearning for change.

Tanner, who was named Male Student-Athlete of the Year while at Tech, signed with the Texas Rangers organization after graduation and honed his writing skills on long bus trips and hotel stays. He says he’s grateful for those journeys in the minor leagues, because many of the short stories and screenplays he started on road trips led to War of Wings.

Tanner also credits his brother Travis, a 1998 LHHS grad, for help with the finished product. Travis worked on creative methods to finance the book’s publication, including Kickstarter.

If you’d like to attend the launch on Saturday, March 29, tickets are $27, which includes admission, a signed hard copy of the book, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. You can purchase tickets online here.

The book is also available at Barnes and Noble near NorthPark.
