DSC0037 Great breakfasts: JJs Cafe

JJ’s offers a variety of pancakes, often seasonal: by Mark Davis

Talk about a turnaround. Back when it was called Divine Coffee Shop, the little cafe in Northlake Shopping Center at Northwest and Ferndale wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t all that inviting either, especially if you were under, say, 70 years old. (For those over said age, it has long been the early and mid-morning hotspot).

Crepes: by Mark Davis

The new owners, Jose Ramirez and wife Josefina Orozco renamed the place JJ’s Cafe, and began making subtle changes. They spruced up the interior and enhanced the menu, but didn’t do anything to scare away the regulars, and now a steady stream of young families are among the faithful patrons. Ramirez, every time I’ve been in at least, spends the day bouncing from table-to-table and if he doesn’t personally know every customer, you wouldn’t guess it.

Now JJ’s proprietors plan to open for dinner beginning March 7 at 4:30 p.m. They’ll be open from 4:30 p.m. until (at least until, they say) 9:30 p.m. The dinner will consist of craw- and catfish, crabcakes, Mexican shrimp cocktail, BBQ shrimp and more. (Drop in to pick up a $5 off coupon for your first Friday evening visit).

JJ’s doesn’t serve alcohol, so it’s BYOB. According to the coupon, in fact, it is BYOB plus something for the cook. And I wouldn’t just assume that’s a joke.

Plan ahead:

JJ’s also will offer a Easter Brunch April 20 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Prime rib, honey ham, catfish, eggs, desserts, choco-strawberries and free champagne and mimosas. Reserve a spot via 214.221.4659.
