Lauren Maurer has big plans to start Kindergarten at White Rock Elementary in the fall of 2015. The dynamo with the mischievous smile and pink cowboy boots has no intention of letting treatment for leukemia stand in her way.

Lauren’s family recently moved to Lake Highlands, and already they’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support.

“This community has been amazing since Lauren was diagnosed on Feb. 6, 2013,” Lauren’s mom, Lisa, told me. “Lauren attends White Rock North School, and from the start, Amy Adams and the rest of the staff and families there embraced our family. Our son is in 2nd grade at White Rock Elementary and the staff and families there have also been amazing.”

LH Knights of Columbus members are hosting a blood drive for Lauren February 22. Over the past year, she has received multiple blood products, and her treatment will continue through the summer of 2015. The drive will be held at KC Hall, 10110 Shoreview, from 8:30 to 3:30 and walk-ins are welcome, but you are encouraged to schedule an appointment here. KC’s Tim King can help with questions: 214-536-0288. There will be a drawing for Quesa-D-Ya’s gift certificates for those on the early sign up list.

“We are so thankful that Lauren is doing amazing,” said Lisa. “She is exactly where her doctors expected her to be at this last stage in her treatment for T-cell ALL [acute lymphoblastic leukemia]. We definitely had some rough patches last fall and had our share of hospital stays longer than we wanted, but Lauren handled it all so well. For being 4-years-old, she has more courage than I ever could.”

“It’s a funny thing you know? Getting a cancer diagnosis for one of your children – it can make you or break you as a parent and family. I truly believe our family is stronger because of this and we will find a way to make a difference when the time is right.”
