Not everybody is a fan of the lovey-dovey hype as Valentine’s Day draws nigh. If you’re looking for a different way to spend your weekend, here are four cool activities going on that aren’t all about chocolates and overpriced flowers:

Run your heart out at the Heart and Sole 5k Saturday morning. Meet at Winfrey Point for the one-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. or the 5k, which begins at 9 a.m. The post-race party includes a bounce house, live music and refreshments. Proceeds benefit Attorneys Serving the Community and Hope’s Door, which helps families affected by domestic violence. Purchase tickets, which cost $10-$35, here.

Looking to build your own backyard chicken coop? Dan Probst of Bageniece Farms visits North Haven Gardens to answer your questions about how to get started. Purchase hens, organic feed, hay and more this Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., or until supplies last.

Lake Highlands United Methodist Church’s Artists of Christian Talent (ACT) will present Guys and Dolls at the church Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1950 and is well-known for the movie with Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando, Vivian Blaine and Frank Sinatra, is the story of mission doll Sarah Brown, slick gambler Sky Masterson, nightclub performer Adelaide and high-roller Nathan Detroit. The ACT production will feature more than 50 Lake Highlands students from 7-12th grades performing on stage, with more participating backstage as lighting, tech and makeup crew. Purchase tickets today at LHUMC from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. or on Sunday mornings between church services. The Teen Scene Players at the Dallas Children’s Theater present a spirited musical adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic tale, “Little Women.” Sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy celebrate life, love and hope against the backdrop of the American Civil War this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Many performances have sold out already, so you’ll want to call 214.740.0051 or click here to get tickets, which cost $12, in advance.
