DFW Fox 4 News has selected the students of Merriman Park Elementary as this week’s “Hometown Heroes.”
In an effort to support teacher Beth Lyons and second grader Hannah English who were recently diagnosed with leukemia, MP students began a fundraiser, Pasta for Pennies, early last month. Students hoped to raise $5,000 in three weeks for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Their fundraising efforts were re-energized when yet another member of the school’s community, fifth grader Malik Little was diagnosed with lymphoma on Jan. 17, within the first week of the campaign.
Now that the fundraiser is complete, students have raised more than $15,000 for leukemia and lymphoma research, successfully exceeding their initial goal, and then some.
