Phil Dawson kick, Photo AFPIn the NFL’s Ice Bowl at Lambeau Field yesterday, Lake Highlands High School graduate Phil Dawson kicked the winning field goal to knock LHHS grad Marshall Newhouse and his Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs and send San Francisco on to the next round.

Dawson, 38, has 15 experience in the NFL after kicking at UT. Newhouse graduated from LH in 2006 and played at TCU before collecting his Super Bowl ring in 2011 with the Packers.

Yesterday’s game was played as an arctic front reached the north and temperatures fell to 2 degrees  (wind chill was minus 11). Some Wisconsin tailgaters said they were sorry they wouldn’t be able to claim the record.

The original Ice Bowl, and the coldest game ever played in the history of the NFL, was the 1967 championship game. On New Year’s Eve, as temps dipped to minus 13 and wind chills reached minus 48, Green Bay defeated our Dallas Cowboys 21-17.
