Mere hours after the Dallas Marathon was canceled last Friday, the Facebook group “2013 Icepocalypse Marathon” was born. Many of its likers were marathon registrants who weren’t quite ready to say uncle. Marathon runners are stubborn that way.

So, some 25 runners gathered outside the 7-11 on Hall Street on the icy overcast morning. Some ran the full 26.2 miles, others the 13.1 half-marathon equivalent. All seemed pretty happy about getting to run and having others with whom to do so. At least that is the feeling one derives from photos by Advocate photographer Danny Fulgencio, who braved potential falls and frostbite to nab a few excellent ones.

About 10 people finished a full marathon and another 15 or so completed the half, organizers say.

News crews were happy to have something other than plain ice and temperature on which to report.

Participants ran from downtown, through Oak Lawn, Turtle Creek and University Park, round White Rock Lake, through Lakewood, up Swiss and back to Downtown Dallas.

Some stuck in packs while others broke off on his or her own.

Race organizers Jonathan Eisenzopf and Sarah Johnson say they will offer medals for the finishers once all the final data from participants is collected.
