Restauranteurs better watch their backs because Genaro Silva just opened his namesake restaurant, Genaro’s, at Abrams and Mockingbird near White Rock, and he says he has no qualms about stealing food ideas from other restaurants. In fact, he plans to.
“I’m going to steal from every cuisine out there,” Silva says. “If you’re a restauranteur and you see me in your restaurant and I like one of your plates, I’m going to steal it. I’m going to fix it, and I’m going to, you know, modify it and do whatever I’ve gotta do. I’m going to do it my way, but I have no qualms or reservations about doing that. It’s going to be fun.”
For now, the restaurant is open for dinner only. Silva will open the doors around 5 p.m. and close them sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight. He’s hoping it’ll be the kind of place where people will want to stay and drink a while, which he detailed the last time we talked.
Other things to note that didn’t make it in the video is all the artwork is done by local artists — at least a couple pieces are by his wife, Patty — and the upholstered banquette that lines the side of the restaurant was designed to help break down the music, so it wouldn’t bounce off all the other hard surfaces in the room.
Oh, and the plate he made for the video, it’s a Gulf Red Snapper, or a “Snapper Al Mojo de Ajo,” as they call it. As you can see, it took me a few times to get it. In the end, they still had to write it down for me.
