The Richardson Symphony League is welcoming new members, and they’re offering a variety of ways for you and your high school-aged kids to get involved and give back to the community. The League is hosting its annual member orientation meeting this Sunday afternoon, and they’ll be sharing information about their Debutante and Honor Guard programs.

The Symphony celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and begins its next 50 years with a new young conductor, Clay Couturiaux. The 2013-14 season will feature six concerts, and League members volunteer their time, talent and resources to support the Symphony as a cultural, civic and educational force in North Texas.

In 1967, League members organized the Debutante program to stimulate their daughters’ interest in music and appreciation in the cultural arts. As the program grew, the girls developed leadership skills and participated in the community by ushering at symphony concerts and conducting fundraisers for the Symphony. Debs now participate in a wide range of community events and philanthropic activities, with each year culminating in the Richardson Symphony Debutante Ball, where high school seniors are presented.

Male Honor Guard members were added in 2002, and – like the Debs – these young men participate in service activities and develop leadership and communication skills which serve them well as they prepare to enter college life.

Students from many North Dallas neighborhoods are involved, including Lake Highlands and other parts of Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Garland, Allen, Murphy, Fairview and others. The program provides opportunities to earn service hours and to make lasting friendships with students from other high schools.

The orientation meeting will be held August 25, 2-4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Richardson, 271 Walton Street, 75081.
