July is the last month to get early bird discounts if you are planning on signing up for December’s MetroPCS Dallas marathon. Formerly known as the White Rock Marathon, the MetroPCS Dallas marathon is Texas’ oldest running marathon and serves as a qualifying event for the Boston marathon. Early registrants get a better price, plus, registration will close at 6,000 entrants in the marathon, 6,000 relay entrants, and 13,000 entrants in the half marathon.
The half marathon, full marathon, and relay race will be held on Sunday, December 8, starting at 8 a.m. The marathon is $100 and the half marathon is $85. The 5-person relay option runs on the same course and is $53 per team member. All fees will go up $15 on August 1.
The marathon route travels through some terrific Dallas scenery, cutting above Kessler Park on Sylvan, over the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and through Uptown, Highland Park, Old Lake Highlands, Junius Heights, and historical Swiss Avenue. Last year, the marathon, which benefits the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, raised $1 million for the hospital from race proceeds.
Runners, walkers, and joggers wishing to join the festivities without logging in the serious mileage can sign up for the Mayor’s 5k, which will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 9 a.m. The 5k (about 3 miles) will include a kid-friendly 1 mile fun-run as well.
