Forerunner Mentoring, a faith-based program for fatherless kids in Lake Highlands, is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday, April 4th and they’re hoping all of LH will get involved.
You can read much more about the program, founded by LHJH teacher and coach Zach Garza, in a great magazine piece by Advocate’s Christina Hughes Babb here. Garza, who grew up angry and defiant without a father of his own, is determined to come alongside the lonely kids he sees and provide the mentoring and leadership they need. Without the program, he says, stats tell us many are likely to fail at school and relationships, drop out, become addicted, turn to crime and end up in prison. He knows these kids, mostly boys, he says, and they are capable of much more.
If you’d like to help, the Forerunner Mentoring Party will be held at Park Tavern (at the Shops at Park Lane, next to Whole Foods) from 6-8 p.m. April 4. There’ll be heavy appetizers and a cash bar, and Forerunner will receive a percentage of food sold that night (donations will also be gratefully accepted). Their goal is to raise $18,000.
