394801_423676724367781_2000001990_nDo you ever wonder how running races became one of the most popular way to raise money for the causes that are important to us? It doesn’t add up when you think about it:

“Let’s ask people to pay $20-$50 to get up very early on a weekend morning and participate in an activity that leaves them gasping for air, sweating profusely, red-faced, sometimes nauseated — lungs and muscles burning — and when it is over they will limp away, or possibly just fall to the ground as they wait for the pain to subside.”

But that doesn’t stop enthusiastic supporters or weekend running warriors from signing up in droves, to support a favorite charity or engage in healthy competition. There’s something so nonsensically wonderful about all of it.

Here’s one for the calendar, a good race on both aforementioned fronts: The Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League Run the Highlands on April 27 is a 5k race. That’s 3.1 miles. Even if you can’t jog a mile yet, you have enough time to build up to this 5k. Might I recommend Hal Higdon’s free 5k training plans.

And, no, running a 5k  doesn’t have to be painful. In fact, participants can walk, push a baby jogger or just trot along and wave at bystanders, as if they are in a weird, kind-of boring parade.

The proceeds from this event will go toward play and art elements at Lake Highlands Town Center. For more details and registration visit this website.
