Margaret Reid adopted Moose two years ago from DFW Metro Golden Retriever Rescue, and the retired school nurse could see quickly that he’d make a great therapy dog. After sending him for rigorous therapy certification, she learned she could also have him certified as a Reading Education Assistance Dog (READ) as well. He was a perfect fit.

Brenda Marr, Merriman Park Elementary’s reading specialist, welcomed him with open arms. She’s had the 1st and 2nd graders at MPE reading with Moose since last spring, and their improvement is evident.

“The feeling is that the animal is non-judgmental,” said Margaret, “and so the kids are less inhibited and self-conscious. They don’t worry about how they may compare to their classmates or how an adult may judge them. They feel they are doing this to benefit the dog, so they feel good about what they can offer.”

Studies say students who read out loud to dogs can improve their skills for reading and comprehension. Parents say the kids find it just plain fun. And, so far, Moose isn’t complaining.
