I wasn’t at Friday night’s Wildcat home football game against Sunset High School, but all through the weekend folks were talking about that evening. Not the game so much – Lake Highlands dominated in the contest 48-0, holding Sunset to just 34 yards of total offense. In fact, Sunset’s offense hasn’t scored a touchdown in six consecutive games.

The comments I’ve heard have been in admiration of the way Sunset’s kids seem to soldier on, having fun and taking pride in the their school despite being dominated in nearly every matchup. The athletes, the band, the drill team – all held their heads high, even knowing week after week they’d go out and get beat.

“Everyone in the Lake Highlands stands was pulling for them,” said Sylvia Bodell, who serves as president of the Wildcat Club with her husband, Scott. “We wanted them to do well.”

Scott noticed that the band, in particular, was disciplined and undaunted by the drubbing they received at the hands of the Wildcats – in many cases, our 2nd and 3rd string players.

“After the game, their band director had the drum line lay down a beat, and the band marched in precision back to the bus,” Scott told me. “It was impressive.”

“It was very sweet the way our neighborhood cheered them on,” added Sylvia.
