This is a great week to have a sweet tooth. Volunteers in the Lake Highlands Area Orchestra Club are baking up your favorite homemade treats, including cupcakes, cookies and, yes, even muffins. They’ll also offer raffle tickets for a chance to win Target gift cards and Amazing Jake’s fun cards.

All proceeds will be used to support the activities of orchestra students in LH, covering festival entry fees, travel expenses, instrument maintenance, private lessons, and college scholarships. The orchestra stays busy all year performing and competing, and they’re currently preparing for the Lone Star Festival of Music at UNT’s Murchison Performing Arts Center March 31, 2012. Afterward, they’ll tour the college and attend the awards ceremony.

Currently, over 175 children participate in the Lake Highlands Area Orchestras from grades 6-12. The LHAOC has redoubled its fundraising efforts this year, determined to reward the students’ hard work and keep the costs of participation as low as possible. They’re hoping to offer scholarships to the five graduating seniors, or at least to those who’ll be continuing their music studies in college.

Joseph Lee wants to go to OU, and earning a spot as first chair in viola at regional competition may have been the break he was looking for. His parents are overwhelmingly proud, but a good starting viola for college can cost about $3000, and that’s pretty steep when added to tuition, room and board.

If you’d like to help Joseph and the other LH-area orchestra students, the Bake Sale items and raffle tickets will be available all this week before and after school at LHHS (library entrance) and LH Freshman Center. Most items are just $1 each.
