Several town-hall meetings on the city’s 2011-2012 budget are coming up in our neighborhood.
Councilman Jerry Allen hosts one at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15 at the Lake Highlands Freshman Center.
Councilman Sheffie Kadane hosts another one at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at St. Thomas Aquinas School, 3741 Abrams, in the drama room.
But if you can’t make it to one of those, you can watch a video of the presentation online.
The budget proposes hiring 400 police officers and closing five pools, including the one at Samuell Grand Recreation Center. It calls for laying off 100 city employees, mostly from parks and libraries. It does not call for a property-tax increase, but requests a 5.9 percent increase on the water rate, which is about $4.40 a month for the average water user.
