Teenage Twist and Shout Dance and Cheer camp founders Janie Tekell and Megan Jodie last week wrapped up a successful weeklong summer camp, where they taught dozens of young girls to twirl, flip, jump, snap and yell with the best of ’em.
As mentioned in the July cover story, Biz Kids, about young people who run their own businesses, the campers most love the last day, when Tekell and Jodie show up dressing their respective Highlandette and Wildcat cheerleader uniforms.
Based on the campers’ reaction, says one mom, one might think Taylor Swift herself had entered the room.
“The girls just love Megan and Janie, and when they come dressed in the uniforms and pose for photos with the kids, it’s like they are rock stars,” says Angela Ponce, who has two daughters, Hope and Haley, in the camp.
Three summers ago, Jodie (an LHHS Highlandette officer) and Tekell (the cheerleading captain and a member of the Wranglers dance team) opened the weeklong camp to girls entering first through sixth grades. They charge a fee of $95 per child. The camp is held at the Jodies’ home on Windy Hill from 9-11:30 a.m. during the last week of July, so mark your calendar for next year.
