White rock-area coach/cyclist/runner Chris Phelan started the Ride of Silence nine years ago at White Rock Lake to honor cyclist Larry Schwartz, who was killed by a school bus mirror while riding his bike. The following year, the event spread to 50 cities, and now it is a worldwide event recognized in hundreds of cities.

This year’s event is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 near the White Rock boat launch.

Here is a video Phelan created to explain the Ride of Silence mission.
