Last week a question was posed on Back Talk concerning whether service businesses are obligated to stay open during the kind of icy and snowy weather that shuts down schools, Superbowl parties and the like. This week on the podcast, we discuss what we found when we ventured out into the neighborhood (or, in at least one case, stayed home four solid days to watch Matt Damon movies).

We also consider the concerns raised by a commenter on the tragedy that recently struck a Lake Highlands family: How can we determine whether to trust a nonprofit? The DMN had a recent story on local athletes’ nonprofits, and whether they adhere to the industry standard — a nonprofit with more than $1 million in annual revenue should spend 75 percent on programs, rather than administration or overhead. Most neighborhood nonprofits don’t collect that kind of money, but because they’re local, should we be more apt to give to them?

Stay with us for this week’s shameless plugs: Befriend the White Rock Creek Trail, wash your car to clean off the grime left by the ice and snow, and dine at a burger joint to find a fruit cup that puts all others to shame.
