RISD students, elementary through high school, shared their artwork with the community Thursday night during a reception for Reflections, a PTA program that encourages artistic expression in young people.
Each year, individual PTAs send 20 percent of the best entries on to the RISD Council of PTAs, which then sends only 10 percent on to the state competition in Austin. From there, students could go on to compete nationally. Mediums include music, film, literature, journalism, photography and other visual art. This year’s theme was “Together We Can”.
Reflections chairperson, Marni Kaner, said that the interpretation of the theme carries the most weight when the judges make their final decisions.
Several of our neighborhood schools were represented last night among those headed to state, including Lake Highlands High School, Lake Highlands Elementary, the Freshman Center, Apollo Junior High, White Rock Elementary and Moss Haven.
Next year’s theme is “Diversity Means”.
Advocate intern Ashley Hudson was at the reception to capture some video of students and their work.
