Nathan Schulman is now a happy, well-adjusted member of the junior class at Lake Highlands High School, fully entrenched in all aspects of life as a Wildcat. But when he first made the switch from private school to public two years ago, he (and his parents) weren’t so sure if they’d made the right decision.

Nathan wrote an article about his experiences for the Student Voices section of Sunday’s Dallas Morning News, and you can read it here. He addresses his feelings of being an outsider, his appreciation that his parents gave him a choice in where to go to school, his parents’ worries about alcohol and drugs at public school, his experiences with bullying and his evaluation of how LHHS stacks up challenging high-aptitude students bound for college.

His teacher, Casey Boland, calls Nathan “one of my AcDec darlings” (he competes on the Academic Decathlon team she coaches). Boland, who writes for the Teacher Voices section, is beaming at his success. “I’m so proud of him!,” she told me.

Nathan’s closing sums up how he feels about the change – “My journey into a more diverse community at Lake Highlands has had its ups and downs, but, at the end of the day, I’m better because of all the different kinds of people around me. I have no regrets.”
