LHHS Principal Walter Kelly is the sole finalist for the job of principal at Highland Park High. The HPISD school board will take a vote in closed session after their public meeting tonight at 5 pm. After only two years as a Wildcat, Kelly is expected to be confirmed easily and begin the transition to HP quickly. The HP job opened up when Patrick Cates, who came to HP in 2002, announced his retirement in April.

Kelly has had a distinguished, if brief, career at LHHS. Under his tenure, LHHS has kept its coveted Recognized status and opened the College and Career Center to aid students in their college search and application process. This year, LH graduates broke all previous records, winning $6.9 million in college scholarships. They also contributed almost 14,000 hours in community service, the most in RISD.

Kelly replaced Dr. Bob Iden, long-time LHHS principal, when Iden retired in 2008. Before that, Kelly was principal at West Junior High. The search for Kelly’s replacement is expected to begin right away.
