The Richardson Rampage, powered by a quintet of players from Lake Highlands, won its first high school hockey state title on Sunday. The Rampage won the Silver Division of the Texas Cup by defeating Austin Leander, 6-1, in the title game at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch.

The Rampage were propelled by a 3-2 win in the first round over top-seeded Garland, a team they had not beaten in the regular season. Alex Aiello put in the winning goal.

In the semis, the Rampage dismantled Plano East, 6-0, behind a hat trick from Brian Rockwell and a goal by LH’s Patrick Ford.

"I definitely did not know what to expect coming into state," LH’s David Gwinn said. "After we beat number one Garland in the first round we gained a lot of confidence."

Both Gwinn and Lake Highlands’ Michael Wren wrapped up their high school careers with the championship. Also contributing from Lake Highlands were Brad Moisan, J.P. Billingsley and Ford.

"It was the greatest way to end high school hockey," Gwinn said.
