Local tree trimming companies probably made a killing after last week’s record snowfall took out branches all over the place. I had to wonder: What happens to all of that cleared wood? (If you don’t leave it out as bulky trash, that is.)

My condominuim complex hired Lindsey’s Tree Service to take care of the fallen limbs, so I called the Northwest Highway and Plano store to find out the answer to my question. Tom Lindsey called me back late in the afternoon, and told me he’d been working all day to clear wood. Though his store sells firewood, the branches and limbs collected and cut over the weekend won’t be good for firewood until next year, he told me. "I guess you can sell green wood if you want to, but that won’t get you very far," Lindsey quipped. (I obviously know nothing about firewood; I have a gas fireplace.)

Lindsey did say, however, "I’ve got more mulch in my yard than I know what to do with." Mulch is another outcome of the tree casualties, and Lindsey’s offers free mulch to any neighbors who want to bring a shovel and haul it out. He’s not too worried about the surplus, though — spring planting is right around the corner.
