Jay Higgins has been the baseball coach at Lake Highlands almost as long as the high school has existed. Higgins, who began his coaching career at LH in 1967, will be recognized for his decades of service and success when he is inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame at a banquet in Waco next month.
"It really doesn’t hit you until they call and tell you," Higgins said.
Under Higgins, LH has posted 763 wins and won 15 district championships. The Wildcats have made the playoffs 23 times in his tenure.
"It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing this 42 years, but it’s gone fast," Higgins said. "I’ve had a lot of great kids, a lot of great parents and I’ve been fortunate enough to associate with a lot of great friends who are coaches."
The THSBCA Hall of Fame banquet starts at 6 p.m. on Jan. 15 in the Waco Convention Center. Former major league great Tommy John is the guest speaker.
