Lake Highlands has a new eatery called Samich’s Sandwiches, right next door to the former Flavor on Skillman. I drove by to scope out the pending Cuzco Latin Cuisine (which is not open) when I noticed Samich’s had taken over a spot that was apparently once a Quiznos. And it was open. I dropped in and tried a Fillmore oven roasted turkey and ham deli sandwich with cheddar and tomatoes on an old-school hoagie bun. It hit the spot. They appear to have a hefty assortment of sandwiches, soups and salads, prepared in a Schlotzsky’s-sort-of setting. The owner, Arturo, who hails from Chicago, seems very optimistic and he says he feels confident the area is on the road to improvement. (We all remember that the Flavor owners moved out partly because of the crime, right?) He offers free wi-fi and plans to feature live music and entertainment beginning in January. He promises to keep us posted about events.
