Lake Highlands-John Tyler is an unusual high school football rivalry in that every game has been a playoff game. The Wildcats and Lions have met six previous times, starting with a 1981 bi-district battle at Texas Stadium.
1981 – LH wins 17-14. Although a technological foul-up allowed John Tyler coaches to hear everything LH coaches were saying on their headsets, including play calls, Todd Tschantz kicks game-winning FG. LH goes on to win state.
1994 – JT wins, 27-7. 5A-Div. 2 quarterfinals. The game after famous Plano East-JT game. JT goes on to win state.
1996 – LH wins 21-14. 5A Div. 2 quarterfinals. LH turns the game’s only turnover into a fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion, then holds JT on fourth down for the win.
1997 – JT wins 24-7. 5A Div. 2 quarterfinal. JT gets revenge for previous year’s loss.
1998 – LH wins 14-10. 5A Div. 2 area round. This time, LH gets revenge with a great defensive performance.
2008 – LH wins 28-27. 5A Div. 2 area round. A missed extra point is the difference. Actually, LH blocked the first extra point try, but was called for offsides, and John Tyler missed the second attempt. LH wins despite starting QB Ricky Zorn being unable to throw because of a cast on his passing hand.
