As the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs rise in the BCS standings – they’re currently ranked 6th in the nation – one LH family has had front row seats to enjoy the fun. John and Sharon Newhouse have only missed one or two games in the four years that their son Marshall, LHHS graduate in 2006, has played for TCU. And Marshall, a senior captain, has played in every game, all four years.

Marshall is a standout on the offensive line, playing left tackle as he did for the Wildcats. He was named 2nd team All Mountain West Conference last year, and he was recently named to the watch list for the 2009 Rotary Lombardi Award, presented annually to the nation’s top lineman.

Marshall comes from a long line of football standouts: father John played in three Cotton Bowls for the University of Houston, cousin Reggie played at Baylor, cousin Rod played at Rice, and cousin Robert had a stellar career playing for Super Bowl Champ Dallas Cowboys.

“Marshall has been extremely blessed to have the opportunity of a lifetime – he’s attending a university he loves, and TCU fits him like a glove,” Sharon told me. “He’s getting a chance to play for a great group of coaches in a sport he loves, and the team is on a winning streak.”

Marshall is hoping to graduate this year with a degree in Public Relations and Advertising, quite an accomplishment since he played as a freshman and didn’t red shirt. And after college? “The next two months will tell about his chances to play at the next level,” Sharon says. “We just pray that he continues to play at a high level and injury free.”

Marshall still keeps up with his buddies from LH, Sharon added, and “we had to increase his texting budget so he could keep up with his LHHS friends all over the state.” He got a kick out of the renovations to the press box at The Boneyard, and his first stop is Back Country BBQ when he returns home for a visit. While at LHHS, Marshall Newhouse was named First Team All District and Offensive Line MVP, and he was even the state shot-put champion his senior year.

John and Sharon are understandably proud. “We just beam when he introduces himself to Frog Fans and thanks them for coming to watch the team play. We won’t get these times back, and we understand how fortunate and blessed we are. He’s come a long way from first grade at Moss Haven Elementary!”

TCU will travel to San Diego State this weekend, and will host Utah – also undefeated in conference play – November 14.
