Grace Devany and Sara Shaw both finished in the top 10 at Friday’s District 9-5A cross country to meet to help Lake Highlands finish third in the team standings and qualify for next week’s Region II meet.

Devany, a senior, was seventh in 13:30.75 and Shaw, a freshman, was right behind in eighth place in 13:31.90. Both also qualified individually for the Region II meet, Nov. 7 at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park, by finishing in the top 10. Complete results are available at Direct Athletics.

While the sun broke out at Norbuck Park in time for the varsity boys’ race, the varsity girls’ race was run in the cold and muck.

"I almost fell and the girl right in front of me fell," Shaw said. "We’ve had a few meets that were muddy, so we’re kind of used to it."

Jayme McDonald finished 11th for LH, followed by Michal Ann Starr in 16th place and Sarah Thomas in 19th. Sophomores Mary Margaret Johnson and Hannah Foley finished 24th and 26th, respectively.

"I’m pleased with both the girls and the boys," LH coach Alonna Knott said. "We had two girls in the top 10 to move on [to regionals] individually, one of them being a freshman, which is a huge accomplishment for her."
