You can tell it is homecoming week in Lake Highlands. The sound of the drums as the marching band practices gets you going just a little earlier in the mornings, and boys are inviting girls to the dance with silly serenades and other public displays. The fun starts this Thursday at 7 pm in the school auditorium with Varsity Revue, a talent show of sorts sponsored by the Lake Highlands Area Band Club. In addition to the Jazz Band and Marching Band, the Wildcat Wranglers, Cheerleaders, Bell Boys and Highlandettes will perform. Other student garage bands and dance acts will also debut their talents. Tickets are available at the door or online – $5 general admission in advance, $7 general at the door, or $10 reserve seating.
Friday is football game night, with the Wildcats facing W.T. White in the Boneyard at 7:30 pm. Check out our Sports Blog for more or come to Picasso’s Wednesday night at 6:30 to hear from Coach Scott Smith for the Wildcat Sports Report. Among the students donning humongous decorated mums, you may spot former students returning from colleges all over the country.
Saturday at 6 pm is the second performance of Varsity Revue, then the traditional Homecoming Dance will follow afterward. This year’s homecoming theme is “Woodstock,” so expect to see lots of kids in tie-dyed tees and bell bottom jeans. LH is unique in its themed costume party – most high schools still feature evening gowns and rented tuxes for the dance. Of course, it IS Lake Highlands, so for every ten kids going to the dance in costume, there’s likely to be a gaggle of twenty parents following behind, taking pictures.
